Bitcoin Cracks $77K: The Pressure Is Building Fast

Bitcoin has fallen below the $77,000 mark, extending a sharp pullback from its recent highs and reigniting fears that the post-election rally may have run its course. The drop comes amid a broader risk-off mood in global markets, with investors pulling back from high-volatility assets as uncertainty around U.S. trade policy and interest rate expectations continues to weigh heavily on sentiment.

The decline is not happening in isolation. Crypto markets are facing a confluence of pressures: institutional investors who rode the wave up are now locking in profits, while retail buyers who entered near the top are sitting on losses. On-chain data shows increased selling pressure from short-term holders, a classic sign that weak hands are shaking out before any potential stabilization.

For Turkish investors, this matters more than it might seem. Turkey has one of the highest crypto adoption rates in the world — millions of ordinary citizens hold Bitcoin or altcoins as a hedge against lira depreciation. When Bitcoin drops 10-15% in a matter of days, those savings take a real hit. The question now is whether this is a healthy correction within a bull market or the beginning of a more sustained reversal that could erase a significant portion of 2024-2025 gains.

Ekonomik Gündem Analysis: Bitcoin’s slide below $77,000 deserves a closer look from a Turkish portfolio perspective. At its peak above $109,000 in January 2025, Bitcoin had delivered extraordinary returns even in lira terms — a Turkish investor who bought at $30,000 in early 2023 was sitting on gains of roughly 260% in dollar terms, amplified further by lira weakness. Now, a drop to $77K represents a 30% correction from the top. That is not catastrophic in crypto terms, but it is painful if you bought in the $90,000-$100,000 range.

From my years managing portfolios at Turkish banks, I can tell you this pattern is familiar. Retail investors in Turkey tend to buy the narrative, not the price. They piled into Bitcoin as a ‘dollar alternative’ — and in many ways it served that purpose. But crypto carries volatility that even the lira, with all its turbulence, rarely matches in short windows.

The key level to watch is $72,000-$74,000, which represents a major technical support zone and aligns with previous consolidation. A break below that would signal a more serious structural shift. For now, this looks like a shakeout. But if U.S. macro data deteriorates further or the Fed stays hawkish longer than expected, Bitcoin could test $65,000 before finding its footing.
