Gold and Silver Post Their Sharpest Drop in Two Months

Gold and silver prices recorded their steepest single-session declines in two months, rattling investors who had grown comfortable with precious metals as a safe haven. The selloff came suddenly, catching many retail holders and institutional portfolios off guard at a time when both metals had been trading near multi-month highs.

The trigger was a combination of a stronger U.S. dollar, rising Treasury yields, and renewed investor appetite for risk assets following better-than-expected U.S. economic data. When the dollar strengthens, dollar-denominated commodities like gold and silver automatically become more expensive for foreign buyers, killing demand. Meanwhile, higher yields make non-interest-bearing gold less attractive compared to bonds that actually pay you something.

For Turkish investors, the picture is more layered. Gold in Turkish lira terms didn't fall nearly as hard as it did in dollar terms, because the lira simultaneously weakened — partially cushioning the blow. But silver, which has a much larger industrial demand component than gold, took a harder hit globally. This divergence matters: silver's drop signals that markets may be cooling on the global growth story, not just rotating out of safe havens. If you hold gram gold at Turkish banks or in physical form, today's dip may look like noise — or it may be the start of a correction worth watching.

Levent KAYIRA Commentary: Ekonomik Gündem Analysis: From my time managing portfolios at Garanti and Denizbank, I learned one rule about precious metals selloffs: always check what the dollar did first. In this case, the DXY (dollar index) strengthened meaningfully, and that single move mechanically pushed gold and silver lower — no mystery there.

What concerns me more is silver's outsized drop. Silver trades with a split personality — part safe haven, part industrial metal used in electronics and solar panels. When silver falls harder than gold, it's often a signal that traders are trimming growth expectations globally, not just repositioning out of defensives.

For Turkish savers, gram gold in lira terms remained relatively stable, which confirms that the lira's ongoing weakness is still doing heavy lifting in protecting local holders. But don't confuse currency-cushioned returns with real returns. If gold corrects 10% in dollars and the lira depreciates only 5%, you still lose 5% in real purchasing power terms.

The key number to watch: if spot gold breaks below $2,280, that opens technical room for a deeper pullback. Turkish investors with large gram-gold positions should treat that level as a serious alert line, not a buying trigger — at least until dollar strength shows signs of reversing.
