Turkey’s May Inflation Number Drops Tomorrow — Brace Yourself
Why does this matter? Because inflation in Turkey has been the single most defining force in household budgets, business planning, and investment decisions for the past three years. Even a one or two percentage point surprise — up or down — can shift borrowing costs, rental contract negotiations, wage demands, and the Central Bank’s next interest rate move. This is not an abstract statistic. It is the number your landlord, your bank, and your supplier are all waiting for.
The May reading carries extra weight this time. The Central Bank has been holding rates steady while signaling a cautious easing path. A higher-than-expected inflation print could freeze that path entirely. A lower print could accelerate rate cut expectations and move the lira. Whatever the number shows, it will echo through your grocery bill, your mortgage, and your savings account within days.

Ekonomik Gündem Analysis: From my years running fixed income and FX books at Turkish banks, I can tell you that inflation release days are never quiet. Trading desks reprice within seconds, bond yields jump or fall, and the lira moves before most people have finished reading the headline number.
Right now the market consensus for May CPI is hovering around 35-37% year-on-year — a continued decline from the peak above 85% we saw in late 2022. That sounds like progress, and it is. But 35% annual inflation still means your purchasing power is being cut by roughly one third every year. That is not a victory lap situation.
For the Central Bank, the political and technical pressure is building simultaneously. Rate cuts are expected by Q3, but only if the disinflation trend holds. One bad inflation print and that timeline shifts by months. Loan rates stay high, mortgages stay out of reach, and SME credit costs remain punishing.
Watch the monthly change figure as closely as the annual one. If month-on-month comes in above 2.5%, that is a warning sign that the disinflation story is wobbling — regardless of what the annual headline says.
